Will the GOP health care bill pass in the Senate?

Answer: Maybe not.

The House passing the American Health Care Act means it will now have to go through the Senate, which will not be easy. The House barely passed this with a vote of 217 to 213 and this is going to be even harder in the Senate. Senate Republicans are going to try to use complex rules to pass a bill with a simple 51-vote majority, but even then they can only afford to lose two votes.

Quite a few senators are already expressing great disinterest in this bill. They are expressing concerns with the Medicaid cuts, the higher medical costs, how it will hurt people with pre-existing conditions, and some even oppose the defunding of Planned Parenthood. GOP leaders have set up a working group of senators to try search for compromises that could unite enough Republicans to get the votes but this won’t be easy. Some democrats and republicans in the Senate are already saying that they don’t see this going through.

There are some Senate Republicans have talked about writing their own bill, and it’s very possible that the bill might not even be brought to the floor. Senators are preparing to make major amendments to the bill, but the details have not yet been revealed and republican senators don’t even think House Republicans will go for the changes. Some moderate House members have said they are relying on the Senate to fix problems they have with the current bill, however strict conservatives will likely be driven away if it goes too far to the center.

Many are even suggesting that the House Republicans simply wanted to pass the bill out of the House and to the Senate to relieve the political backlash. Now this falls into the hands of the Senate Republicans who will face the problem of angering their voters who wanted an Obamacare repeal and the anger of those who don’t want to lose Obamacare-related benefits and protections.

So it’s very possible that this bill will be DOA in the Senate. However, many republicans voted on this bill simply because it repealed Obamacare and we might see a similar pattern in the Senate. Many said that the House wouldn’t pass the bill and it did, so don’t discount the Senate either.

Again, despite what many people are saying, this bill is NOT DEAD. There are still many ways this can go. Read up and stop spreading misinformation.
