If the homophobic, transphobic, AND racist act of violence that happened a year ago has forced you back into the closet or has made you feel afraid to go into gay clubs, oe made you feel afraid to come out, it’s OKAY.
You are allowed to be mindful of your own safety. Being assaulted and murdered in spaces that are supposed to be safe for us is a scary thought. You have EVERY DAMN RIGHT to stay closeted or not attend LGBT events or go to clubs if you don’t feel safe.
That doesn’t make you any fucking less gay, lesbian, bi, pan, trans, or nonbinary. It doesn’t mean you can’t love your identity and this strong community that has been through hell that people can’t even begin to fucking imagine.
You are not a coward. You’re not weak. You’re not submitting to your oppressors. You have every god damn right to care about your own safety. You are in NO WAY obligated to be open about your sexuality if that really makes you feel unsafe. You don’t have to go to gay clubs or pride if you feel unsafe either.
You’re not turning your back on your community. You’re doing what you feel is best. Don’t let any asshole tell you otherwise.
