Charm is actually a common trait in abusers. The thing people ignore is that no one starts out being a scumbag. Instead they are charming, attentive, friendly, supportive, and everyone likes them at first. In fact when their victim first complains about something that has happened friends & relatives that the abuser has charmed will side with the abuser and make the victim feel like they are overreacting. Wash, rinse, repeat because the abuser will take every time someone sides with them as proof that no one cares about or trusts the victim. And since the victim has tried and failed to be heard, it gets even easier for the abuser to break them them down and isolate them. You’re not picking the wrong person, the wrong person has picked you and became whatever they needed to be to get you.
