On August 1, Disney Hyperion is publishing a young adult novel about your friendly neighborhood Spider-man, Miles Morales, and it’s written by Jason Reynolds- a highly acclaimed Black YA writer.
The story is explicitly about race and class in Brooklyn, and especially what it means to be a biracial kid on scholarship, and how that interacts with having superpowers. His Black and Puerto Rican backgrounds are both explicit and important to him in the text. It’s also really, really funny, and emotional, and makes me want to go read all the comics about him, even though I know they can’t live up to the way this book isn’t about Spider-man who happens to be Miles Morales, but rather Miles Morales who happens to be Spider-man. I waited on line at BEA for a long time to get a copy, and it was 100% worth it.
Seriously. This is a book you want to read. Pre-order it at your local indie bookstore (or at Amazon, if that’s your thing). Request it at your local library. But plan to read it, because it’s amazing.
