people talking about how nonbinary people have always existed is genuinely really important and beneficial, but i wish people didn’t use colonial era photos of 2 spirit people as proof that “people have always been nonbinary!”, both because that feels incredibly exploitative and because talking about aboriginal concepts of gender as just essentially being “nonbinary people but they didn’t have the word for it yet” is really ignorant and reductive

from what i’ve seen these different “third gender” categories tend to have more in common with “binary” trans men and trans women than they do with a completely distinct non-binary identity and yet have been seemingly hijacked by non-binary people using precolonial cultures as a gotcha…
