I remember writing about this wave of young black girls bridging the gaps between pop culture and important conversations on racism. I love that within the last few years there has been a rise in girls like Zendaya, Yara Shahidi and Amandla who have platforms speaking on fashion, music and other entertainment but also social problems. I want black girls to have people like them to connect with, the duality of it all is so necessary because while you should be socially aware, you should also be allowed to engage in the things all teenaged girls engage in.
It’s obvious though, that the girls I mentioned are all light skinned and mixed amongst other things. It isn’t their fault that they occupy these privileges and they aren’t responsible for societies willingness to pay attention to black girls like them over the darker girls. However, it is our job to go the extra mile in making sure other types of black girls are represented in this light. Pay attention to the Skai Jacksons and Normani Kordeis when you see them, these girls speak the same truths as Zendaya and Amandla…
