bruddabois:

We don’t talk enough about how violent homophobia, transphobia and biphobia in the caribbean is upheld by media silence. There’s no reporting of trends of violence against LGBT+ people here. We’re treated as jokes, outliers and threats before we’re treated as human beings and potential victims by media. There’s no self-reflection of the Caribbean diaspora on our history of hate because we are told it doesn’t exist on a scale big enough to be a problem. All this while laws exist that criminalize our existence to the extent that we can be deported, fired or jailed for existing peacefully.

Watch the lack of coverage in the coming days on the death of Dexter Pottinger. Watch closely at the lack of mainstream analysis of the circumstances surrounding his death. I want y’all to pay attention to the lack of discussion around the death of Dexter Pottinger that is respectful to his memory. I can say this because that’s what we’ve become used to here. Understand that the loud silence is the norm. In the Caribbean, we don’t matter.
