Funny how trans people gotta pay thousands of dollars to be seen as their gender while cis people pay zero

Seriously though. In most states there’s no laws against job discrimination for trans people. Same with housing discrimination. Our unemployment rate and homelessness rates are high because of that. And the assault rates against trans people, especially trans women and trans women of color are high, all because we aren’t “passing” or cis people don’t see us as our gender. Transitioning for a lotta trans people is a necessity. We pay thousands of dollars to transition in order to not just live a happy life, but to attempt to not face violence and discrimination. And even then we aren’t respected. Cis people pay zero dollars for their gender identity to be respected while we struggle.

In order to transition we have to have enough money, in order to have enough money we have to find and keep a job, but how we gonna do that when most states don’t have anti discrimination laws for trans people.

This is a really really good point which I feel is rarely discussed. And in places in the world with free healthcare that cover trans related medication and surgeries, the wait list is ridiculous. In some places in the UK, the estermated time for a first consultation with a medical specialist can be up to FOUR years… And even then, it’s simply an assessment and you cannot get hormones or any kind of medical treatment until at least your second or third appointment, which can be another 1+ year of waiting. And that’s only after managing to pluck up the courage to approach your GP and deciding this is what you want to do, which can take people years and years to do for various reasons.

Nobody talks about how this kills trans people: either shelling out everything you have for all sorts of surgery, hormones, ID changes, ect. usually without having a stable income which puts people in unlivable debt, or having to wait and wait and wait for YEARS to be seen by medical professionals. When you take into consideration the amount of high amount of mental health problems, family problems, job problems, and other external problems trans people face… Both these situations often end in attempted, and somtimes successful suicides.

This really is the side of being trans that cis people don’t have any idea about and will never be able to understand. We’ll never know about the true amount of trans deaths esp related to suicide because a lot of these people are closeted, unable to transition due to money or not being able to stand the wait.

The amount of money and time it takes for us to be seen as “acceptable” by society and to be comfortable with our own bodies is literally killing us.
