This week, the Canadian government will be in Bonn touting Canada’s climate plan. It will be joined by Canadian oil companies working to put a green hue on Canadian tarsands – but the world shouldn’t be fooled.
The truth is, Canada cannot yet meet its own arguably weak climate targets. The country plans to expand oil and gas production despite evidence that this is inconsistent with Paris goals. Then, there is the issue of the toxic sludge of waste products from Canada’s tar sands destruction, which form what are known as tailings ponds.
As of this year, these ponds hold 1 trillion litres of sludge that is unlike any other industrial by-product in the world. They contain a unique cocktail of toxic chemicals and hydrocarbons that will remain in molasses-like suspension for centuries if left alone.
These open, unlined ponds currently cover 220 sq km, an area of land equivalent to 73 New York Central Parks. A single tailings pond – the Mildred Lake Settling Basin – has been identified by the US Department of the Interior as the world’s largest dam.
Also note that the same oil companies who produce these poisonous oil-bogs are constantly saturating Canadian media throughout the country with bright and sunny advertisements, trying to normalize what they do and get people thinking that they’re “environmentally conscious” when in reality they’re absolutely legendary for cutting corners, bypassing legal regulations, buying politicians, attempting to sway elections at every level by exploiting media monopolies, and outright poisoning or displacing people to get at the oil under their land.
Reminder that Lena Dunham wrote an autobiographical book in which she molests and abuses her little sister and nothing ever happened to her legally. Reminder that Lena’s sister has openly stated that growing up she felt like her sisters property. Reminder that a self-admitted pedophile runs a successful TV show and is still considered a feminist icon by a lot of people. Reminder that this world is a shitty and disgusting place.
while I’m being controversial tonight let me get this out of my system: when someone shares a happy memory, or a story of healing, or a step they made on the path to recovery, reblogging that and adding “LOL CANT RELATE” immediately outs you as a rude, selfish brat and I see it all the time here. as a mentally ill person I know the temptation to relate everything back to the way you personally are coping but it just… it’s so disheartening to see stuff like that added to posts you made in light of feeling better
if you think that sex and gender being social constructs means that dysphoria and transness are no longer meaningful, you have grossly misunderstood what a social construction is
money is a social construction, but that doesn’t mean that there are no real world consequences from your bank account balance. knowing that money is socially constructed doesn’t change whether or not you need to pay bills.
@ all the 13 yr olds on here (and 12 yr olds i know ur out there i mean i joined this site when i was 12) PLEASE do not try to fit in with everyone by hyperexaggerating negative traits to say you have bpd or etc. and reblogging all of those kinds of posts excusing bad behaviors due to it, i am not saying its bad to be like “well that isnt normal, maybe i should read more on this and do some research on wether i may have x mental illness”
but see if you read a post on tumblr and immediately go “wow i guess im x now” its really harmful like…if you get stuck in that mentality your brain will make up things and can cause symptoms of stuff to worsen or even develop its like.. a placebo effect where you are so convinced of something your brain makes those things more apparent when they were not at all before because you become so focused on the idea of having x mental illness.. its not worth it and again im not saying everybody does this! i dont know stangers lives at all and im not going to pretend like i do because i dont but i have seen this kind of thing happen and it is really ..detrimental is the best word i can think of to describe it
