Today, I got an email

sj-flemings-writing:

Today, I got an email from Patreon. Patreon is the only way I get paid for my writing, and I only have about 7 patreons for a total of 15 bucks. But that’s still more money than I was making getting published by magazines.

Here’s the email itself

Alright, sounds good, right? I make more money.

Except, instead of lowering their fees, Patreon has decided to up the fees of the patron. So, if you pledge to me, say, five dollars, you aren’t paying five dollars. Sure, I get that five, but you’re paying 5 + (0.29*5+35). That’s a total of 5.495, or when rounded up, 5.50. You’re paying ten percent more. That number gets even higher when you’re donating a dollar (1+(0.29*1+35) = 1.38, so you’re paying nearly 40% more).

This could be a way of Patreon subtly encouraging you to pay larger pledges, but that may not be reasonable for everyone. Different financial situations don’t mean someone should be shut out of supporting their favourite artists and writers.

According to Patreon, they “ran experiments” and determined that most patrons were happy that more money was going to their chosen artists. That’s fair. But, as a creator, I am not happy that my patrons will be charged more. Sure, I get some more cash in my pocket, but frankly, I’d rather my patrons state they’ll pay 5 dollars, and then actually pay that, even if service fees mean I get less.

Anyways, this is just a headsup, and Patreon is apparently informing all patrons tomorrow of this change. If you are supporting me on patreon, thank you so much, and I’m sorry that this change means you get the short end of the stick.

I don’t feel sorry for white women that voted for the orange menace because you could have had a white woman that was pretty much only down for y’all and a specific type of feminism and y’all could have rode that wave for fucking decades but Common Sense aint so common

it’s weird seeing the people who hurt you, who are essentially the antagonist to your life story, be nothing but goodness to others. it’s this concept of good vs bad, as if we are solely one or the other.

the people who have hurt us are good to someone out there, the protagonist to someone else’s life story. the people we love dearly, have also been the source of pain to someone else.

Today in posts that annoy me: this tweet about the how no one says fuck the fire department.

And it’s because like… okay at least in NYC, the fire department is just as systemically horrible as the police are, but they’re more low about it so they get away with a lot. But shit like racism is rampant in the FDNY – it’s just not as obvious because they don’t (actively) kill people the way the NYPD does. Like, I know elders who have talked about how the fire department used to refuse to come to some blocks to put out fires (the Bronx is burning, anyone?).

And that shit hasn’t stopped today – in fact, the Vulcan Society (the Black firefighters group) won a lawsuit a few years ago because of discriminatory hiring practices and antiblack/racist shit happening within the department. Things like, people having Confederate flags up in houses, wearing KKK hoods, etc.  Mind you, it’s not just firefighters either, but EMTs.

I don’t think it was officially reported, but someone very close to me works for the fire department and just a few weeks ago, a Black EMT found a noose in his ambulance. And ofc the people who did it said it was “a joke” and “not racially motivated” and I think got off with just a paid suspension.

But yeah.

These white supremacists are all over city/state departments, just because the violence isn’t as explicit doesn’t mean it’s not there.
