I’ve been debating whether or not to speak up because I usually don’t? But I feel this is important.

As a Latinx, more specifically a 1st generation latinx immigrant raised in the usa, watching the last Jedi, especially Poe’s arc, was soul crushing.

Where I’m from watching a weathy well dressed white woman belittle and patronize a latinx is an everyday experience. Latinx suffer all sorts of indignities because we know with just a word from them we could lose our jobs or worse.

How many videos are there of white women shouting slurs at us, threating us with police and deportation because they’ve just assumed because we are latinx we must be undocumented? And those of us who are undocumented suffer the most at their hands. How many rich white women take advantage of undocumented latinx? How many of them have nannies and housemaids they hire and underpay? Your ‘angry white soccer mom’ meme mighy be funny to you but most undocumented latinx fear shitty people like her.

Its so easy for them to devastate someones life.

I could rave and rant about the shit my family and I have suffered at the hands of wealthy white women but instead I’ll remind you that over 50% of white women voters voted for Trump and Roy Moore.

They had every opportunity to make Holdo a strong statement against those percentages. They didn’t.

So if you watched tlj and hail Holdo as a feminist savior I’ve got bad news for you. Your white feminism isn’t cutting it anymore.

He wasn’t poor.

He was bored.

He had a choice to become anything else and he decided… that he wanted to try to live out his retaliatory GI Joe fantasies… Like he said that.

And yet people across the internet are making excuses for him like he didn’t say that he joined up to try and get revenge for the US like he’s Rambo 2.0.

(Yes he was “only” eighteen back then, but that doesn’t mean we can’t criticize him for his past decision or the fact that he doesn’t seem to grasp that his reasons for joining up are kind of creepy… Especially to Muslim people who have to see fandom and media fawning over him constantly.)

I will judge him not because he was 18 at the time, but because as a 30-something adult man he obviously still doesn’t grasp he was wrong. If he’d followed any of this with “and I see now that I was being Islamophobic and immature in my mindset and nobody should do what I did, specially when you are that young”, I can excuse his mindset as the time as an immature 18 year old. 

But he ain’t 18 anymore. 

And this type of mentality is still harmful today and he is a multi-million actor feeding right into that culture. That is why people like Adam Driver should be nowhere in the military and having access to the kind of power men like him get there.
