Here’s the thing, tho – absolutely no one is stopping you from having ur m/f ships. In fact, I don’t know anyone in fandom (who isn’t a gross cishet shipper, mind you) who doesn’t have at least one m/f ship. Sure, people like to crack jokes about m/f ships (because 90% of them are unnecessary and forced), but no one is rly coming at anyone sideways over a ship like that.

I’d have to disagree though. There are recurring themes that we should consider.
1. Misogyny
Often if there is a f/m ship and people decide to make it gay it’s at the expense of the woman in the relationship. She dies or is written out moves away. She disappears and the is almost never a satisfying ending in people’s fantasy for her. I’ll admit that I don’t prioritize f/m ships, but often if a character is put in a different ship it’s the man. And even the actresses can suffer from the way fandom protects men, but barely does that with women. (Captain America, The Flash)

2. Racism

It’s not a secret that m/m ships are more popular and shipped louder than f/m of f/f ships. More so when a woc is involved. However if leading men are men of colour (often black men) the fandom will immediately latch onto any (often white) f/f ship the is. If it’s healthy or not. (Supergirl)

So to say every f/m ship is treated the same is wrong. I agree that with f/m ship the viewership as a whole is less critical and therefore writers have become very sloppy in showing us good and healthy relationships that are carefully explored. That results in things feeling forced, but the characters and actors who have to deal with the nasty comments are women (especially woc) and poc in general. I mean Candice Patton’s head was photoshopped onto porn cause she dared to play Iris West and ended up being in a relationship with Barry all while not being white. They photoshopped her into porn and called her a whore for that. Just saying it’s not that simple.

Okay but absolutely none of that has anything to do with the fact that making a post that says “let bi people ship m/f ships!!” is effectively useless, because a) no one is stopping them (like I said in my first reply) and b) they don’t call attention to any of the ways that fandom biphobia makes it hard for bi/pan people to ship bi/pan characters with characters of the opposite binary gender. I am well aware of fandom misogyny and racism (I’m a nonbinary person of color), but that’s not what we’re talking about here.
