idk shit about Star Wars cuz I’m not a nerd but this is literally the most pathetic backstory they could’ve possibly given him. Like if you want someone to feel sympathy for the major villain in your series…maybe go more in depth than “my stupid parents cared more about saving millions of people instead of me :((( they have to DIE now”
i’m pretty sure he isn’t supposed to be sympathetic at all. it’s weird fans that have tried to make him a fragile, misunderstood character. the film does no such thing.
in TFA, we see Kylo Ren slaughter innocent people, torture Poe and Rey, brutalize and try to kill Finn and Rey, wage war against his mother, worship Darth Vader, and serve as a leading figure in a regime meant to parallel the nazis.
we learn that he murdered his peers while training to be a jedi, and he kills his own father, one of the most beloved characters in the series, right after his father tells him he loves him.
it’s also weird because like, star wars as a series, tonally, never shied away from the bad guys being just straight up fucking evil.
even after New Hope was a success and two sequels were planned, Vader wasn’t actually given a redemption from his start as the b-film Bad Guy That’s Just Evil. the climax of Empire isn’t just finding out his relationship to Luke, it’s also finding out that he really doesn’t have a non-evil core motive. he tries to persuade his son to re-enter his life by asking him to join in ruling the galaxy. he’s just a tyrannical fucker. and then, Jedi still doesn’t give him a redemption arc. he gets a forgiveness arc. Luke believes that there’s some good in Vader, and is proven of that when he kills Palpatine, but the whole point of the aftermath is that he’s committed so much unspeakable evil, that the act of remembering and regretting is so traumatic that he fucking dies. he gets forgiven by exactly one person, his son, and knows that no one else will ever forgive him, and that kills him, as it should. (on that note, i still prefer the AU where Luke dies in Cloud City and Leia confronts Vader, and just fucking eviscerates him before telling Palpatine to choke on his “killing the genocide dude make u dark side” bullshit. Luke is a baby for forgiving Vader but alas it does fit his character)
and then the prequels – the antagonist is literally just Palpatine. there’s not really anything to explain here. and they don’t even really deepen Vader in any redeeming way. they make you understand how he became evil, they don’t reveal some stupid twist where “actually he was doing all that evil stuff in service of some benevolent goal!”
so where would anyone get the idea that the new trilogy’s antagonist, who literally fucking idolizes Vader and is also does all the shit he does onscreen, is heading for a redemption arc, or a backstory that doesn’t have the thesis “this fucker had the choice to be evil, and he chose evil.”

I’m so tired of having to tell non-black kpop fans why it’s offensive when idols wear dreads, braids, wear grills, etc. It’s so fucking draining because none of them will ever understand and it feels like I’m talking to a brick wall. You try to explain and they just brush it off. They look at the idols like they’ve done nothing wrong and in turn, tell us that we’re overreacting. How about you just shut up and listen to what we have to say?
